Decided to leave Rockport earlier than planned so as to be settled in at Justin's in Tucson before Sandy's birthday on Jan 6.  Considered driving the back roads through Texas but the weather wasn't very good so we headed for Interstate 10 (which runs across the southern states from Florida to Los Angeles). We had to join I10 in San Antonio so decided to stop off for a few hours to visit the Alamo.  This was the site of a very famous battle in US history when Texas was trying to separate from Mexico and join the US.  The Mexican army under General Santa Anna were trying to stem the rebel uprising in San Antonio and took 4000 troops to attack the city. The 200 US troops, including Davy Crockett, retreated to the Alamo fort and ultimately everyone was massacred by the Mexicans.

After a truckstop sleepover at Fort Stockton, TX, we headed through El Paso into New Mexico and didn't stop until we hit Tucson, Arizona in the early evening.  Fortunately it was Tuesday - half price night at the Casino of the Sun - so we had the best meal deal in town, $3.50 for a full buffet dinner!

Blue skies and sunshine - it's great to be back in Tucson where they average 350 days of sunshine a year. Decided to take it easy for a few days and just enjoy the weather.  It's easy to feel at home here as most of our neighbours have been coming here for years so we know many of them from last winter.

We both went for a ride up Mt Lemmon on the Suzuki - we should have remembered from last year that it's way colder at 9000' than in Tucson. Really enjoyed the hot chilli in the sourdough boule in the cafe at the top.

It's really cold here - should have dressed warmer

Had a great bike ride in the Waterman Mountains (Jan 18) - I went there last year on my mountain bike and really wanted to try the same trails again on a motorbike as there's a great climb up to a disused mine that's a killer if you're pedalling but lots of fun on the Suzuki.
