Banff has many great bike trails very close to town, but you've got to be fit - there's lots of elevation gain and you usually start out at about 4500'.  There's a good choice of single-track, double-track, both easy and difficult.

Lake Minniewanka single-track

10 miles away at Canmore, there is the Nordic Centre where World Cup MTB races are held (July 7-9, 2000). Stopped by during training sessions and saw several of the big name riders.

July, 29 - Silver Star Mountain, near Vernon, BC is open all summer for bikes and hosts the Canada Cup DH and many other events. Apart from the numerous trails served by the chairlift, there is a single-track, Spanky's, all the way back to town - 22 Km !!!  Met a couple of local riders on this trail who showed me the stunts (and were around to pick me up after my crashes - tough ride!).  Sorry about the quality of your pictures, Richard.  Guess strong sunlight, deep shadows, and a point-and-shoot digital camera don't go together well!

Size matters - I didn't try it!
This log ride is way tougher than it looks
