Arizona

Florence
Jan 24, 2004
I found a listing of many interesting 4X4 trails in the Florence area in a great book - "Arizona Backroads and 4WD Trails" - and posted a message on the www.AZdualsports.com website to see if anyone wanted to ride there.  Mike, Carl and David, all on KTM640's decided to go, and despite lousy weather - who ever heard of a rainy Saturday in Arizona - we had a great ride along Price Road, Box Canyon and the Martinez Cabin trail. Really liked the spectacular rock formations in Martinez Canyon, even in the mist.

After Carl and David left early, we headed down the Coke Ovens Trail.  Most of it was quite easy but a few sections involved rock slabs and steps or steep loose hills, so overall the trail wasn't suitable for beginners.  It seems to be a very popular area and we saw several other people on the trails - jeeps, ATVs, and dirt bikes.

The coke ovens were interesting but I couldn't believe the amount of garbage left there by inconsiderate visitors - beer cans and bottles, and junk.  The trail guide book said the ovens are on private land and were previously closed to the public - I wonder how long before they are closed again.

There's many trails in this area and we'll definitely return for more exploring - probably on a sunny day!
